Where to Shop in KW this Mother's Day
By: Chris Hussey
You’ve heard it a million times, but it still holds true: Moms are the unsung heroes.
And yet, so many of us order something off Amazon or visit a generic big-box store and call it a day.
This is the woman who literally pushed you out of her and turned you into a semi-competent adult for crying out loud. Doesn’t she deserve something as special as she is?
‘Okay sure Chris, that’s nice and all, but Mother’s Day is just a couple days away! Where else am I supposed to go?!’
Well, don’t panic just yet. If you’re still on the hunt for something special for Mom this year, there are lots of awesome local spaces that are perfect for last-minute shoppers like us. And lucky for you, I have lots of time on my hands and put together a list of my favourites.
You can buy me a coffee later (Large with milk, please).
Anyways, let’s do this. Here are 6 local businesses to shop for (or with) Mom this year:
Colour Paradise Greenhouses
There’s a reason flowers are the go-to gift for Mother’s Day: They work! But where can you go to get amazing plants and flowers grown right here in Waterloo Region?
Ladies and gentlemen, I present Colour Paradise, one of the Region’s hidden gems. They have a HUGE greenhouse just 1km west of the Sunrise Centre in Kitchener (I honestly don’t know how I’ve missed it all this time), and they have the biggest variety of flowers, tropical plants, succulents, veggies and herbs I’ve ever seen.
They’re open until 6pm on Saturday, so you really have no excuse not to pop in and see their selection. Or, if you’re not sure what your Mom would like, it’s also an amazing place to bring her along for a day out together!
Pro tip: Take advantage of some of the specials and deals they have right now! Petunia hanging baskets are on sale now for just $9.99 (In case you don’t know, that’s a steal!)
When you buy a gift card of $25 or more, you’ll receive a free mini rose – It’s a pretty great combo, wouldn’t you say?
“We carry beautiful products.”
It’s a simple message, but it’s one that proves to be very accurate for Gifted Waterloo. This local gift shop is located in Uptown Waterloo, and they carry a wide assortment of unique, useful and beautiful giftware, home decor and paper goods.
Dana Shortt Gourmet & Gifts
If you want to play it safe, you can never go wrong with chocolate. Dana Shortt Gourmet is well-known in Uptown Waterloo for their prepared food, chocolates, and gift baskets. No matter what tasty treats you’re looking for, they’re sure to have something to satisfy any Mom’s palette.
The Culinary Studio
Looking for something you and Mom can do together? The Culinary Studio in Belmont Village offers full hands-on cooking classes where you get to head into their kitchen, don an apron, and work in small groups to cook all of the recipes from scratch. Then, at the end of the evening, you get to enjoy all of the food! How cool is that?
Pro tip: Get a gift certificate so you two can make a day of it at time convenient for both of you.
Does your Mom want to live a bit more organically? If so, you’ll want to pop into Cocoon Apothecary right by downtown Kitchener. Since 2003, they have been producing and selling artfully-crafted green skin care, and what makes their products especially awesome is that everything is all natural. Their plant-based line is vegan, biodegradable, and made with ethically-sourced ingredients. They’re especially focused on helping people with mature or sensitive skin, which is always a plus in my books.
White Tiger Vintage Boutique
White Tiger Vintage is recognized as one of the staple vintage stores in the city, and for good reason. They bring in a lot of cool stuff you just won’t find anywhere else, and if your Mom is looking for some new fashion this Spring, I highly recommend giving this place a try. Give them a call or visit their store in downtown Kitchener to purchase a gift certificate - They’re open until 6pm on Friday and 5pm on Saturday.
